Review of Nim's Island (2008) by I'M Alex — 29 Mar 2009
I'm battling between a 6 or a 7 with this but I'll figure it out as I'm writing this. It is easy to dismiss this as kiddie and border-line stupid but it's so well-made and energetic that at the very least it is entertaining. Gerard Butler's Alex Rover is a decently fun character who's pretty funny but his Jack Rusoe character has a horrible American accent. Jodie Foster survives slapstick with her dignity intact. It doesn't hurt that she looks great wet...and I've had a massive on her for nearly 10 years now.
But Abigail Breslin is a different story...a very different story. What happened to the wonderful little actress is Little Miss Sunshine or Signs....or Little Miss Sunshine? She fell in all the traps of normal child actors: sacrificing acting for cuteness, waiting for her turn to speak instead of listen and over-emoting to the point of me going through the screen and give her a slap. I mean what the fuck bro?!
Screw it, I'm giving it a 6...thanks Abigail for sucking.
