Review of Nim's Island (2008) by Nate P — 15 Dec 2008
While Abigail Breslin did what she could with this film (even the narrating is well done), and Jodie Foster is both convincing and interesting, the film version of the Nim stories clearly doesn't do justice to the books, though.
Introductions to characters are rushed and poorly developed. Interactions are, therefore, less than believable due to the lack of development. These problems are typically the combined effort of editing, screenwriting and most importantly directing.
The movie is packaged right at the "perfect length to make money off of kids" size of about an hour and a half- but it always helps to make the story coherent, and story is more than plot, but truly the development of the characters that make up the parts.
Overall, a movie I would rate as poor if not for the sound acting, so instead I'll say it's fair.
