Review of Nim's Island (2008) by Steven D — 27 Jun 2009
I enjoyed this as a children's movie and I felt there was not a lot to be offended by.
There were a certain amount of seal gas jokes and some peril for the main characters. As a parent, I stayed furious at the dad for most of the movie.
I felt the characters were very unique and enough different from each other so that it set up some interesting interactions. There were several laugh out loud moments for me.
I felt like the film stumbled a little bit at the end, but ultimately I was left wanting more. (Kind of a "Sleepless in Seattle" sort of feeling.).
So, having previewed the film, I do plan to show it to my kiddos.
Topics to talk about:
How far should we be willing to go to help other people?
How can helping other people actually help us?
Nim wanted to "Defend her island from invaders", was she right to do this?
