Review of Nim's Island (2008) by Irina M — 12 Aug 2009
Nim's Island tells the story of a girl who grows up on an island in the middle of the South Pacific with her father. Said father goes to discover a knew type of Protozoa and is lost at sea. So, Nim e-mails Alex, a world reknowned adventurer who is actually an agoraphobic author in New York. And hilarity ensues...Not really.
This film is the perfect example of a **1/2 rated film. It doesn't do anything wrong, but it really doesn't do anything right either. It just scrapes by. Some people might think, "But it's a kid's movie!" To that I always counter with, "Watch Spirited Away!" A great children's film is able to captivate children of all ages, and speak to the inner child of anyone. But, more than that it speaks to the human spirit like any great film does.
Nim's Island never rises to the occassion, and it shows with lack luster performances from the entire cast. They just don't have their hearts in it and it shows.
Bottom Line: **1/2 Rent this one if you absolutely must, but don't buy it.
