Review of Nightwatching (2007) by Paul H — 28 Nov 2007
Very beautiful. Lighter and more conventional than his usual. Woven into Rembrandt's personal life (following successive relationships with three women) is an elucidation of some of the mysteries of the infamous painting, some feminist commentary (which may help bring to their senses those who had completely misunderstood Baby of Macôn), and a glimpse into what was, and still is, the most progressive and interesting nation in the West -- the Netherlands.
It has a bit of the intrigue of Draughtsman's Contract and a bit of the self-reflexive questioning of Baby of Macôn, but, unfortunately without quite the bite and dynamism of either. Still sooo much better than what most other filmmakers are doing.
