Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Mike G — 01 Jul 2007
So I had a bad experience with Fellini to begin with. I watched 8 1/2 because it was recommended to me and found it snoozeworthy and pretentious wank (and this is coming from somebody who *loves* Tarkovsky.
.. the only film-maker whose movies necessitate 8 cups of coffee in order to sit through) but this little film is wonderful. Against expectations Nights of Cabiria (perhaps better translated 'Cabiria's Night') is heart-warming and bitterly sad it is not only well-told, economically plotted and wonderfully acted , particularly by the magnetic and always carnivalesque Giulietta Masina - the director's own wife.
Not only this but for a story largely concerned with human tragedy it's sense of activity and liveliness in the shot construction is a pleasure to watch.
