Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by El F — 22 Oct 2016

Sometimes when I am not that inspired to select a movie from the never ending moving pictures roster, I tend to simply type "best movies [year]" on Google. Surprisingly, this technique seems to always pay off as I got to watch movies I had forgotten even existed, even though they went out a year ago or so.... Nightcrawler was the last one I got myself into through this lazy method.

As you can clearly see from my rating, I was not disappointed in any way.

This movie is simply great. I am not very skilled at writing movie reviews so I'll be concise.

Jake Gyllenhaal is a genius of an actor and a monster in this movie. He plays a free lance sensational news footage maker who quickly turns his job into a morbid obsession. The more shocking the footage, the more money he gets, you know that kind of story very well. But I believe that the movie doesn't shine the most through its critical approach of emotional news reporting (targeting insecurities in order to raise the channel's ratings etc...), but through the character of Lou Bloom, an antisocial psycho who would break every ethic boundary to do better in what he loves doing and get more money. It might sound a bit easy to say this but Jake Gyllenhaal's performance is simply astonishing.

Great night-time atmosphere (better than Drive, also don't know why I am mentioning this movie), the soundtrack sticks to the different tones of the movie even though it is not very memorable.

Man, I don't know what to say, it's just great and I'll just leave a quote from Lewis Bloom himself : "I would never ask you anything that I wouldn't do myself". Funny don't you think? Cause... You know, he would do anything and stuff? Hm.
