Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Rosie C — 27 Jan 2019
I think this was my eighth time seeing this film after having watched it first about two years ago. This is extremely unusual for me, but I have immense admiration for this passion project, and it is without a doubt one of my favourite pieces of filmmaking. .
Everything in this movie I love, to say the least. It seems crazy for me to think about having seen it so often, yet still it all works so well and fully gets me. .
Goosebumps, laughter, utter shock... all over and over again. .
What Dan Gilroy has crafted is impeccable, not just for an debuting director, but overall. .
I believe if you truly give your whole attention to Nightcrawler, you will find endless details in it, that will make you fall in love with it deeper and deeper. .
This is a film that has so much to say without ever being judgemental. .
It is simply stating facts about our society and about what can happen when you leave your empathy and morals alone in your apartment. .
I would like to mention that I liked Roman J. Israel Esq. as well and have seen that once so far. In a few days or weeks I will rewatch that, partially because I want to prepare for Dan Gilroy's third outing, but also 'cause I wanted to see it right after my first viewing of it anyways. .
There's really something about the honesty and the delivery of it all, that so far just glues me to the screen of a Dan Gilroy movie. It is thanks to his vision and thrilling but knowingly underwritten scripts, it is thanks to John Gilroy's great editing, and of course to mention one important name out of many also thanks to the genius of cinematographer Robert Elswit. .
The score is also very important and masterfully done by James Newton Howard. It all takes you right into the mind of the main character. .
I almost even forgot to mention the stellar performances in here. To my mind all of the three performances that the movie focuses on are easily Oscar nomination worthy and in Jake Gyllenhaal's case it's needless to say he should have won it that year. .
I am blown away each time by his portrayal of Louis Bloom, who as a matter of fact, is the character I am most fascinated with, in all of cinema history. There is so much to interpret into his words and no need for any backstory, it's amazing. .
I am very excited to see what the crew has done with Velvet Buzzsaw, which is apparently coming out in February of next year. .
These films are like rare animals.
