Review of Nightbreed (1990) by Ryan Z — 04 Oct 2007
Clive Barker's second directorial effort is one of those "almost" movies. With a better script, a bigger budget, and stronger direction, this could have been an amazing genre film. As it stands, it is a cool little movie that fans of monsters will dig.
The story concerns Midian, an underground world that is home to monsters. And what monsters they are! This is heaven for a make-up effects fan. All of the monsters are incredibly original, and brilliantly realized.
They are things of nightmares! I own this film for the monsters alone. The performances from the humans are weak, however. Craig Sheffer is bland as usual. David Cronenberg is a human villain, and his acting skills leave a lot to be desired.
I still love the guy, though. The last thirty mintues, when the monsters fight the local police force for control of Midian, is a lot of fun. John Agar has a small cameo as well! Perfect Halloween fare, and a jewel for fans of monster make-up.
If only it could have been BIGGER!
