Review of Nightbreed (1990) by Johnathon W — 03 Nov 2014
Cult classic that holds up pretty well today, especially the new director's cut that expands the plot & universe. Clive Barker's restored cut fills plot from the original release, which helps expand the universe & also the character development (Lori & Boone's romance is much better handled in this version).
However, things still move a bit too quickly at times (Boone appears in Median almost instantly) and the villains (outside of Croenberg's creepy Decker) are too one-dimensional. Plus, Median is so cool you wish more detail was given, such as it's origins and the law.
Nevertheless, Barker crafts an intriguing universe and the R-rating gives it more energy than similar tales. Overall, a great, if flawed, horror/fantasy film.
