Review of Night Train to Lisbon (2013) by Sarah M — 14 May 2013
This is a movie that really invites me to go and read the book. There's so many insightful sentences that I would want to read again and couldn't enjoy completely when just briefly hearing them.
I also think the book might be more exciting than the movie.Raimond Gregorius is touched by the story of Amadeu de Prado, a story that moves him to go to Lisbon and escape from his otherwise dull life.
A story within the story unfolds as he meets the different people that were part of the Portuguese revolution against dictator Salazar, and tries to understand who Amadeu was. For me personally I would have enjoyed the movie more if it was completely in the setting of the revolution itself, rather than from a distance, which caused me to not really connect with it.
There were some great scenes, the setting of Lisbon is just beautiful and there were quite some touching moments, but I missed the excitement of discovering what took place during the revolution. There was a kind of dullness in the progression of the movie that I think could've been avoided (although perhaps it reflects a bit the dullness of the main character).
