Review of Night on Earth (1991) by John R — 17 Apr 2004
This is a great little gem of a movie from Indie hotshot Jim Jarmusch.
Basically, it's five loosely related stories (by loosely I mean, all happening on one night, in and around five different cabs, either side of the Atlantic).
But the plot ain't important. A wonderful cast including Winona Rider and Armin Mueller-Stahl make up the numbers, while Jarmusch sprinkles his magic everywhere. It's a movie about people, not a movie with people.
The only thing I disliked about this movie was Roberto Benigni, who I found to be immensely irritating as the obnoxious cab driver. But maybe that was the point. I didn't think we needed to hear his story about the sheep, however.
A fresh, emotive film that you will love, if you like indie movies.
