Review of Night on Earth (1991) by Wendy S — 14 Sep 2011
5 cities. 5 cab rides. 5 stories. All at exactly the same time.
I have mixed feelings about Jim Jarmusch's films. I enjoyed parts of Coffee and Cigarettes and I loved the directorial style and photography but I found Broken Flowers extremely tedious and uninspiring (despite the amazing cast).
Night on Earth, however, was really good. Surprisingly funny, poignant and tragic all at once. A simple (and somewhat overdone) idea executed to perfection. Yes, some stories are better than others.
New York was my favourite with an unexpected connection between Brooklynite Yo-Yo and East German Helmut and so many laugh-out-loud moments.
L.A. was also notable for Winona Ryder and Gena Rowlands on-screen chemistry. It just felt like such a genuine little look into the lives of two very different people and the brief time when their lives crossed.
