Review of Night on Earth (1991) by Katie M — 24 Sep 2007
I don't know how Jarmusch can hold a shot for that long and still make the film interesting, but I can never tear my eyes away from one of his films. This was no exception. It's funny, sad and kind of unifying. I love the way he made each city distinct, but gave this sense that in the end they're all the same. I love how he manages to make his characters quirky, but not to the extent that they're unbelievable. Also, his films are really genuinely international.
This film is basically just five stories in five taxies across the US and Europe in one night. It's got a great cast and each twenty minute vignette is its own story, has its own mood, without taking away from the movie as a whole. It's great. Also, the soundtrack is by Tom Waits, as Jarmusch's tend to be. That in itself is awesome.
