Review of Night of the Living Dead (1990) by William J — 29 Jun 2009
Zombies have always been a cult phenomenon. Which is why going on to say that this is a "useless remake" as some critics claim is a little preposterous. It is simply just a fan pleasing money grabber; no shame in that. Even with out seeing the original or for that matter a true zombie horror I still found this film enjoyable in many ways.
It sets the scene in a little country home where several strangers find themselves surrounded by the undead. They scheme a plan to board up the windows and take refuge until they can find the keys to a gas pump and escape in a truck. When they find the wrong keys and blow up both the gas tank and the truck is where things really begin to go South. Now completely out of options the deranged Harry Cooper decides that he will risk the lives of everyone else to save his own neck.
That little aspect right there comes off as an interest point on screen. Watching people become so desperate for their own survival makes you question your own mental stability in a time of crisis. Does Cooper actually have an excuse for have such a terrible behavior or is he simply just a selfish human being?
