Review of Night of the Living Dead (1968) by John E — 29 Sep 2010
Even watching this movie now, it's apparent how totally mind-blowing and unheard-of such a concept was back in the day. The story is inspired and Romero's societal commentary can't help but be heard.
Romero was very brave for having a bleak ending, an hysterically worthless woman and the decision to have a competent black lead (a real innovation at the time). The film's claustrophobia does get to you as the movie goes on.
The main problem this movie has is the zombie effects which are rather unconvincing. I know that this was due to budgetary limitations, so we have to count on the characters' reactions to understand their perilous situation.
Had we based it on how the zombies looked, we would not be convinced. I'm pleased Romero was able to improve on that with this film's sequel.
