Review of Night of the Lepus (1972) by Ray D — 12 Sep 2008
Wonderfully deadpan slab of 70's Eco-Horror with a cast that features Rory Calhoun (Standing on his hind legs all the way through the movie), Janet Leigh, and DeForrest Kelly sporting a boss leather jacket and moustache, as well as one of the most annoying child actors ever.
It's a monster movie where the monsters are a horde of giant, hormone-created rabbits who breed in an abandoned mine and then come boiling out to terrorize a small town. The special effects are very lowbudget, but occasionally effective in an absurdist 'I can't believe they're doing this' sort of way, aided by the fact that everyone in the movie plays it straight and serious--the rabbits are set up to be terrifying and treated like, say, the vampires in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN.
The newscaster at the beginning who tries to set the stage by showing what a threat rabbits can be in real life is the icing on the cake. You'll probably know before sitting down to watch this if it's the type of movie you'd enjoy.
