Review of 'night, Mother (1986) by Samuel D — 13 Aug 2009
A simple tale centered almost entirely around two people, a mother and her daughter. The mother is a clueless character, played excellently by Bancroft. She's childlike and naive to what is going on in her world.
Her daughter (played equally well by the consistent Spacek) is a woman who has been freed from her lifelong depression, after a failed marriage and issues with her troublesome son, as she has decided now is the time to end her life, on her terms.
As the movie unfolds, we steadily grow closer to the realistic characters, one plagued by a life of woes. Surprisingly, there's a lot of charm to this depressing movie as both characters open up to one another for probably the first time in their lives.
They truly connect, its just a shame it takes the death of one of the characters for that to occur.
