Review of 'night, Mother (1986) by Carole D — 27 May 2012
I rented this movie in the late 80s, uncertain of what I was really about to see. The first few minutes are slow, but it's pretty hard to turn away from once you make it past the first ten minutes or so.
The dialog between Spacek and Bancroft is compelling to say the least. In retrospect, it always amazed me that the entire setting for this film took place with the confines of this one small house. Perhaps that feeds into the tension we feel as we helplessly watch the tragedy unfold.
In college, I had a friend that committed suicide. I remember thinking how he gave up, without knowing what the future held for him. This film places us in the middle of watching the hopelessness of Spacek and the helplessness of Bancroft.
