Review of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) by Ronnie S — 14 Aug 2010
Ok. Lets set this straight. The feel of the NYC indie/alt rock seen is basically what makes this movie charming. Michael Cera plays the same person he does in every damn movie. Kat Dennings plays her part well... enough.
Sometimes I would think to myself "would anyone actually ever say that?" The dialogue is written pretty poorly sometimes. If this was fixed, some of the other problems would be less apparent.
In the middle of the movie, Peter Sollett gives up and goes for gross-out humor. And that ends up being the gag for the rest of the movie. This and other poor directing choices sort of build up a grudge for me against Sollett. Personally, I think another director could have done lots with this movie.
Even though I have since graduated high school, the end still hits my heart. It's a great scene that (not really) almost makes up for the rest of the movie.
Another thing: where are the parents? Do Jersey parents really let their children out into NYC by themselves.
Most of the critical reviews are right: this movie is extremely exploitative.
When Nick and Norah kiss for the first time, watch Gary. He looks at them with a sort of creepy look, as if he knows they love each other already.
