Review of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) by Jess K — 05 Apr 2011
When I was younger I had two dogs named Nick and Nora (after characters from The Thin Man). They were loveable animals. While Cera and Dennings are good in their parts, and believably awkward if entirely predictable, the rest of the film suffers from simply feeling like so many other quirky, hipster romances.
The film rarely feels like a comedy beyond a running gag (so to speak) that's original but rarely chuckle-worthy. More than anything Infinite Playlist makes it seem that all we nice guys need is a gang of gay cupids following us around.
The film does nicely portray that kind of night where uncertain mixes with inevitability and never seems to end yet ends too soon. Although for something called "infinite" that end is never in doubt, and the same score is repeated in several scenes.
Still, beyond being cute this playlist is lacking that extra something to make it loveable.
