Review of New York, New York (1977) by Sunil J — 14 Feb 2009
Liza Minelli is sensational in Scorsese's homage to the musical. Shot beautifully and is timeless in a similar way to Polanski's Chinatown. Scorsese's big pawprints are all over this one: this is not just a musical but an explosive love story in which our heros Jimmy (De Niro) and Francine (Minelli) play out what happens when two uber creative types get together.
Knock out performances, with De Niro on the brink of boiling over throughout; passion ultimately becomes destruction and what is laid bare is the path to inevitable disaster. It's compelling viewing.
Scorsese was told that the box office could take at least $10 million more if only he'd change the ending. He didn't. A must see.
