Review of New York, New York (1977) by Acacia & — 09 Dec 2009
Still conflicted about this one. Some painfully raw and fragile scenes, particularly between DeNiro and Minelli, but ultimately lacks the pace and vibrancy of the studio musical, if that is indeed what Scorsese was aiming for (but with a revisionist bent).
Much as I love Scorsese's vision and intent (his voice can lull me into a delightfully contented stupor), this is a long and somewhat frustrating film that falls just short of fulfilling its potential.
Love the swing and bebop numbers, though . . . and Minelli's rendition of the title song . . .
