Review of New York, New York (1977) by Roy C — 05 Apr 2010
Easily one of Scorsese's lesser movies. By no means bad, but not up to the standard of his other films. Liza Minnelli is only able to draw our sympathies at certain times - likewise, De Niro only makes us care one way or the other about his character at certain moments.
There are other, more awkward times where the scene and the characters within outstay their welcome and we hope they leave us alone. As a visual film this is a splendid homage to the garish musicals, but as a character film of Scorsese's it is not up to his usual standard.
Worth a watch, but not many more.
