Review of New York, New York (1977) by Tibor B — 06 Jan 2011
Scorsese's audacious experiment, made in the 70s creative freedoms, is an interesting mix of old studio-era technicolour form with 70s improvised acting styles and a far less ideal take on romance.
De Niro is on top egomaniacal form here, reprising the "Travis Bickle on a date" scenes from Taxi Driver whilst Minelli is as gawkily annoying as usual, though she can sing. Strangely the love/hate form of relationship did find a plausible groove, and the lush sets and swinging music provided eye and ear candy.
I found it an interesting formal experiment, though the nearly 3 hour running time was completely unjustified, and De Niro and Minelli weren't an endearing couple that I wanted to spend so much time watching.
