Review of Never Say Never Again (1983) by Carole T — 02 Mar 2011
1: This is very strange. In some ways it goes where many Bond films have never gone before, which is to say Bond is aging, as of course Sean Connery was, but it only pays this aspect of the character lip service.
Essentially, he is the same old Bond, only the surrounding cast isn't quite right, the gadgets are inferior, the locations are less exotic and fantastic, the action isn't as exciting, and the production values don't live up to our expectations.
To put it another way, the film was a disappointment and should never have been made. The concept is somewhat brilliant, but to successfully show Bond as an aging man would require a far more sophisticated and skilled script, cast, and team of filmmakers.
It's possible I'm being overly critical, but this didn't live up to my expectation of what a Bond film should be, and of course it isn't really an official Bond film. It certainly didn't help that it was made in the 1980's and sadly entirely embraced the worst of the decade in terms of music and fashion.
