Review of Never Let Me Go (2010) by Fahmi I — 17 Dec 2011
For all intents and purposes this is a Sci-Fi film. But instead of big futuristic set pieces/CGI and suspense thrills, it focuses on the human drama of these characters. The movie smartly avoids explaining the political reasoning.
Are we so far away from dealing with something like this? Filling in the blanks are quite obvious. All the performances were as good as it gets. 'Never Let Me Go' is perfectly paced and never crosses into unnecessary melodrama.
Romanek has such a subtle hand in crafting beautiful images but still lets Ishiguro's words do the majority of the work. The empathy I had for these characters was overwhelming at times. With only two films to his credit(and a ton of music videos)Mark Romanek is creating some of the most haunting and surprisingly affecting film.
I hope and pray I don't have to wait another 8 years for his next film.
