Review of Network (1976) by Matthew G — 11 Apr 2010
Prophetic and brimming with relevance for any age governed by visual media, Network says what others could not say with the style and finesse that others could not replicate. Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay is an intelligent, darkly humorous force that drives the film with a gathering intensity. Like the greatest plays, its tragedy is inevitable, yet still gives us a visceral emotional jolt at its completion.
In many ways, Network is terrifying. Its ghouls aren't supernatural forces, they are men. They are suited plutocrats, puppeteering the lives of millions through manipulating the airwaves. They are very real demons, ones that exist in the shadows of our media-soaked culture. And the most terrifying thing is, the history of television has behaved like one, long epilogue to Network. And it is a depressing epilogue. And it is a damn dark ending.
