Review of Network (1976) by Sabrina I — 30 May 2011
An excellent satire on the circus that is the television news. I admit I laughed a few times; the film deals with serious issues and has a serious ending but it's also quite funny in parts but what makes NETWORK brilliant is that it foreshadows the state that the news is in now where sensational headlines are discussed more than the important issues.
The film took my breath away because it's really not that far from reality - putting a crazy man on air who rants nonsense every night and people begin to follow him? I think I can name a few in the news right now who spur nonsense and people blindly follow ;) .
..ANYWAYS the performances are all excellent but in particular liked william holden in this film; his character was quite a flawed man but Holden helped us atleast understand him. The film has multiple layers and needs to be seen over and over because it's such an important film but also a well made one with a juicy and witty script to boot! We need more films like this!
