Review of Network (1976) by Ryan V — 16 Feb 2012
Although professionally shot and featuring a worthy cast, Network rises to excellence based primarily on its prophetic message. The story, surrounding the news media exploiting an anchorman's madness in order to boost ratings, foretells a laundry list of things that came to pass a few decades later.
It's not hard to look at Peter Finch's brilliant portrayal of Howard Beale and see the angry windbags that lurk around cable news today. Sidney Lumet's Network is both funny and emotive, but it's also chilling since it presents a persuasive message about how the fourth estate transforms humanity into a soulless commodity.
