Review of Network (1976) by Maxwell S — 27 Jun 2012
If society were only able to watch one single film, and I had to choose, it would be this one. Paddy Chayevsky, though hasn't done anything else important to cinema (maybe Altered States for sci-fi fanatics), but this has to be in the top 5 greatest scripts ever.
I mean my favorite kind of film is one that has almost too much to say and it still turns out to be a great film. Network is the epitome of that. This is (other than Magnolia and Boogie Nights..long story) my favorite film.
Lumet used a lighting scheme in which light gets more and more intimate throughout, which I thought was brilliant. That also shows that this film isn't artless. Everyone involved in this film called it "too real to be satire", which couldn't be closer to the truth.
I showed my father this film, currently 72, and he liked it, but didn't love it, he acknowledged all the great points it made, though. I suppose this shows that I have more of a personal connection to this.
