Review of Needful Things (1993) by Matthew C — 03 Oct 2008
I found this film to be very perdictable; it didn't offer any suprises, twists, or even new interesting ideas in my opinion. This film steals from concepts presented in The Twilight Zone's famous episode "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street".
...as well as countless stories in literature about people selling their souls to the devil to fufill their deepest needs. If you want to read interesting stories about the devil trapping souls by selling them their desires then explore Ray Bradbury's, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (the film adaptation is pretty decent!) Maybe Stephen King offers more in his novel, "Needful Things", but I just thought the film was lacking.
Although I must say, that Ed Harris did a nice job in the film, and Max Von Sydow is perfect in the role of satan! Also, what was up with all the explosions in the film!? It gets tiring after a while.
It would be better for the filmmakers to chill us with suspense then to overwhelm us with explosive eye candy!
