It is inevitable that this film will be compared to "This is England" but even though this comparison has it's justifications there are some slight differences. Firstly it's set in Scotland (commence slow patronising clap).

The second and most important difference is the feel of the feel of the film. Where "...England" has a pendulum of emotions ranging from the hilarious to the downright dark this movie has an overall tone of grey.

Okay then grey-black with a hint of blue. This in no way means to take away from the film but rather to show you that the film portrays the slummish areas of urban Scotland during a time of economic and political turmoil which a lot of people may be able to relate to.

Peter Mullan does a fine job of making us care for the characters (although at times there may be too many to try and care about). Mullan himself gives a wonderful performance as the drunk and useless abusive father (not that he's useless at abusing but just that he's useless and abusive).
