There was no point whatsoever to having Naomi Watts' character in the story. She served no purpose other than to appeal to a slightly wider audience. Geoffrey Rush's part could easily have been played by a different actor.
Bit of a waste having those two great actors in such small parts. Other than that it was pretty good.
