Review of Near Dark (1987) by Donald T — 08 Apr 2008
Kathryn Bigelow, a former art photography student, reinvents the western, road film, and vampire genre in a singularly original vision. This is the kind of cult film that comes along once every 20 years and garners a huge following by those that appreciate artistry.
Of course, it's more than that: Near Dark is extremely violent, darkly funny, beautifully photgraphed, and impressively and hauntingly scored by Tangerine Dream. Great ensemble acting (especially by three cast members of James Cameron's Aliens) and production design.
This is the sexiest neo vampire/western hybrid you'll ever see.
