Review of Near Dark (1987) by Tony R — 27 Jun 2009
A good vampire movie. It would have been a GREAT vampire movie if the director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, the Hurt Locker) had given an even amount of care to each scene. Her early scenes feel like a low budget 80s indie movie but not in a good way.
It sort of feels like amateur hour. But when the vampire clan (consisting of three Aliens alumni...great casting) enter a bar and proceed to terrorize the patrons, the film reaches a level of greatness.
It's a perfectly timed scene that was obviously carefully planned and expertly constructed. I just wish the rest of the movie had the same amount of care applied. The climax of the film is also really exciting, and seeing the vampires burn in daylight felt really original.
But because of the slow beginning I wasn't really in the mood by the end.
