Review of Near Dark (1987) by Sarfaraz A — 18 Jan 2013
Near Dark vampire/Western Kathryn Bigelow, who co-wrote with Eric Red. Starring Lance Henriksen, Adrian Pasdar, Bill Paxton and Jenny Wright.
Set in Oklahoma, Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) meets a sexy and spaced-out Mae (Jenny Wright) one night - she is traveling with her family of bloodsucking. After being bitten by Jenny while romantic-kissing he is kidnapped by the family and sort of becomes half vampire. Jenny supplies him blood with blood of her own - when he refueses to hunt. Adrian's father and kid-sister are trying to track him down.
I don't think the movie succeeds in establishing horror-atmosphere; it would be more than embarrassment to include this as token to horror genre. However, the movie picks up romance in darker-tone with exceptionally well-done humorous scenes and dialogues. Pure characters and amazing love-story of its kind. Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark stretches vivid decade of 80s - and vitally innovative picture for young and adult alike.
