Review of Near Dark (1987) by Brett H — 13 Mar 2014
Fairly let down by this supposedly "classic" and "scary" vampire flick from Kathryn Bigelow, long before her Hurt Locker days. There really isn't much to the story except a looking-glass view into the struggles of a vampire "family" once our protagonist becomes one himself.
From there, the film just plods along with nothing groundbreaking happening and there are no scares to be had. The saving grace is Bill Paxton who is wickedly entertaining as the psychotic, Severen, who's clearly been alive way too long and it's getting to him.
There are some neat ideas here and there, but the overall impact is less-than stellar and it's not as exciting as I'd hoped it would be.
