Review of Nazis at the Center of the Earth (2012) by Storytellershannon M — 23 Jun 2012
This is a pulpy, silly âmockbusterâ? tale by Asylum Productions which was trying to ride on the coat tails of the popular video game, Wolfenstein 3D, and probably a European film titled âIron Skyâ?. It brings in the Hollow Earth mythology (that a pristine world is underground our world) and lots of gory, flesh using practices as well as Nazis who escaped and are planning to take over the world (because their scientists have been working on a secret weapon). There are several homages to popular films so look for them if you dare. Acting abilities are all over the place with scenes that are sometimes surprisingly well done, even if dark, for a âBâ? film.
This was purposefully filmed as a 1980s âBâ? film. Twelve day shoot on a budget of less than $200,000. Impressive even if you feel this was a cheesy film. Note that this grading is based on the âmockbusterâ? scale, not the typical Hollywood film. This otherwise would not be a fair review.
The director's commentary makes this a lot more interesting as he talks about a very limited budget and how he chose to just run with it as well as interesting tidbits of advice for film students. He comes across as a gracious and friendly guy who is doing the best that he can with a very limited budget. For his commentary alone the DVD was totally worth it.
STORY/PLOTTING: B minus to B; CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B minus; CINEMATAGROPHY: B plus to A minus; ACTION SCENES: B minus; DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY: A minus to A; WHEN WATCHED: end of June 2012; OVERALL GRADE: B (on a âmockbusterâ? scale).
