Review of Natural Born Killers (1994) by Raven X — 04 Jun 2011
I honestly have no idea how I really feel about this. The aesthetic of the film was all over the place, but everything seemed to fit together in a disturbing sort of way. There was a lot about it that I found pretty genius (like the sitcomification of Mallory's abusive past), but after a while I felt like Stone was just throwing crazy things like that into the mix without discretion.
I'm ambivalent about the B&W slow motion replay things. Some of them were appropriate. Others were unnecessary in my eyes. The whole movie felt like a balloon that was so full that it could pop at any second.
But I think that was the point, so in that sense, great success. Overall, it was just weird though, which isn't always a bad thing. Probably why my feelings are so mixed. Interesting incorporation of archival footage.
Haven't really seen that used in narrative features like this. Acting was top notch, so points for that. Woody Harrelson shines.
