Review of National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) by Stefan G — 14 May 2014
Even though it's stupid in the traditional American sense, it's actually better than the other National Lampoon films, if mainly because you don't have to feel bad about watching it. The characters are at least better, but the Griswalds are still basically a composite stereotype of suburban America, in a joke that has already gotten old.
Besides, I know they're trying to play it for laughs, but there's so much of the film they don't intend to be funny, but I find myself just making fun of a lot of the plot twists. Speaking of the plot, it's not bad, but I find that they could have at least tried harder to make a plot that wasn't so dumb.
There are quite a few ways the film can make me laugh, but many of those are on the second half of the film, and many of the jokes aren't that clever.
