Review of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) by Jackson S — 29 Dec 2012
I'm not a John Hughes fan. I think he coasted on the good will generated by a handful of genuinely good films ("The Breakfast Club", "Planes, Trains and Automobiles") while churning out mediocre comedies that blended the domesticization/suburbanization of the Baby Boomers that ruined much of popular culture in the 80s with puerile slapstick and toilet humour.
This movie falls decidedly into the latter camp. It has it's moments, but really not a lot of them.
