Review of Nashville (1975) by Jason R — 10 Nov 2008
One of my favorite movies, Nashville is still really relevant. Don't come to Nashville for a story. It is mostly a character study with an election as a backdrop. The characters seem to all be archetypes for real people at the time and the viewer is allowed to speculate who they could represent.
There are great performances all over this movie (Lily Tomlin, Keith Carradine, Ronee Blakely, Geraldine Chaplin, Henry Gibson), and all the characters were charged with writing and performing their own songs.
I particularly like the "I'm Easy" scene and how Altman was able to tie the multiple characters together through the song. The structure was a big influence on Magnolia. Gotta love Opal!
