Review of Narco Cultura (2013) by Carlos Z — 16 Apr 2014
I found this documentary extremely interesting. To me, it shows the disconnect between music (narcocorridos) and those directly impacted by the violence caused by cartels. This is the US equivalent of hip hop and gang violence.
In the documentary, the cartel lifestyle was glorified through music, but contrasted constantly by the grisly reminder of how the victims cope with the loss of a loved ones. The real tragedy here those living in Juarez live in terror, meanwhile those that sing about it (and make a living from it), live far away from the turmoil.
The one thing that would have made this documentary even better would be if they sent the narcocorrido artist to Juarez to experience the pain and terror their band glorifies.
