Review of Nanook of the North (1922) by Alex S — 17 Aug 2008
You may have seen a gag where 18 clowns pile out of a car. This movie starts similarly except with nine Inuits piling out of a kayak. Thus begins the world's "first documentary," a harrowing look at the struggles for survival that faces an Eskimo and his family.
If you work at Sea World, fast forward through when the walrus and seal are hunted and get to the more engaging parts like building the igloo and, well, that's about it. Look, I know there is not a ton of subject material here (you have snow, ice, a silent movie and not much else) but really now.
Add to the fact that this landmark film was highly staged and guided through production and you get an experience that should be incredible and instead comes up blah. Nanook really deserved better.
