Review of Nana 2 (2006) by Maria O — 07 Jul 2007
Unfortunately, NANA 2 comes very, very short of its predecessor. I was bored to the point of yawning several times during the movie and considered stopping it altogether. Hongo Kanata was the only cast replacement that actually worked out; Yui Ichikawa failed to emulate Aoi Miyazaki's performance in NANA (thus not making me sympathize with Hachi at all) and Nobuo Kyou just irritates me because, for me, Ryuhei Matsuda is Ren.
The removal of the entire Shin and Reira subplot was egregious and made Truth completely pointless (not to mention it relegates Reira to minor character status, which is an insult to any NANA fan who knows how important Reira is).
The pacing is horrendous and makes me wish that they hadn't tried to cover so much of the storyline. Had they put the Shin and Reira subplot back into the movie and covered less of the storyline, the movie might've turned out better.
Oh, and don't get me started on the ending. That wasn't an ending! It was a poor attempt at trying to wrap up all the loose ends! Honestly, the returning cast members are the movie's only saving grace, Mika Nakashima in particular.
Her portrayal of Nana is still dead-on and it's that performance that makes the movie worth watching. Otherwise, don't waste your time on this piece of crap movie. You're better off reading the manga series.
