Review of Naked Lunch (1991) by Mikael K — 01 Jul 2009
Here's an astronomically fascinating, deliciously disturbed, Lynchian Alice-in-Wonderland -type piece of ingenious storytelling! I first saw this as a little kid and it completely revolutionalized my impressions on the power of cinema, contributing greatly to me becoming a movie buff. It is amazing how much mysterious and enchanting atmosphere as well as staggeringly innovative ideas can fit into two hours of film.
The very eccentric book by William S. Burroughs has never been among my top favorites from this extremely influential author, but Cronenberg has really grabbed the best of those surrealistic writings and crafted something unique from them. The result is a refined, forever fresh and effective story that touches me somewhere in the very deep subconscious. This is a masterpiece if I ever saw one.
