Clint Eastwood has this serious, yet cinematic assurance touch with film. Something always seems to strike somewhere deep inside to trigger such a strong emotional response, that I am often left reeling.

Like the laws of physics, he seems to understand the mix required to garner just the right reactions from his audiences - and yet combine this with stellar casts, and a human depth many films often forget for the sake of bangs, light and noise, and you realise the man is one of the few masters of cinema.

This story is a seemingly simple one, which manages to build and layer and - even though things seem reasonably pointed at a tragic end, still manages to deliver an even more ultimate, telling tragedy.

Sean Penn is a powerhouse, and totally convincing from the first of his scenes to the last. Not one for fun Friday night in with mates, but a film not to be missed.
