Review of Mystic River (2003) by Phillip D — 20 Mar 2015
Maybe I have finally seen too many Boston movies. Maybe the old neighborhood has gotten a little too familiar. Whatever it is, Mystic River just didn't hit a chord with me. It was well acted and well crafted, with a final scene that really is an incredible reflection on the implications of the movie but with the exception of that moment, the movie moved slowly and failed to pack the punch of similar films like Gone Baby Gone and The Departed.
In many ways, I feel like the teased at battle between Jimmy and Sean would have made for a significantly better film. On the other hand, maybe it's time to stop doing Boston movies. We get it, the city sucks, life sucks and the people suck.
The aspect of the gritty, ethnic underbelly has been massively overplayed and it's time to move on.
