Review of Mystic River (2003) by David L — 27 Jun 2016
I I've seen this movie about 4 times. Obviously, it's very good. For what is a tale of woe, loss, revenge and regret, it leaves the viewer somewhat light and optimistic after viewing it (well, it did me, anyway).
Whereas Eastwoods 'million dollar baby', whilst also amazingly good, left me quite depressed and I vowed never to watch it again, 'Mystic River' is a superbly cast, well written, well filmed, well- it's just GOOD.
I stumbled across it last night, but this time I watched it with subtitles. I'm not sure why I chose subtitles, but I'm glad I did. Whilst all the acting is perfection, it made me realise why Penn, Robbins, Fishburne and other actors of their caliber are so revered: They speak the lines clearly.
There was one supporting actor in Mystic River who, whilst acting very well, I realised I was missing a lot of his dialogue. However, with subtitles, I got so much more of the plot! So much more, and I now realise why it's regarded as a masterpiece.
Highly recommended!
